What Does a Chinese EV Really Cost to Import? FOB, CIF and Landed Price Explained

Updated 26 Oct 2026. Craveuo sells new-energy vehicles through authorised Chinese exporters. By default the car is delivered to your door (DAP) and cleared by a local customs agent we recommend; you pay the import duties and taxes. You can also buy FOB China and arrange the rest yourself. All figures are estimates with stated assumptions, not a quote from Craveuo.

Short answer

A battery-electric SUV priced USD 30,000 FOB China usually costs about USD 36,000 to 41,000 landed in the countries we checked. Sea freight and insurance add roughly USD 1,050 to 2,700 (CIF about USD 31,000 to 32,700), destination duty and VAT add roughly 15% to 26% of CIF, and broker, port and registration fees come on top. The tax rate in your country matters more than the freight.

FOB, CIF and landed price in plain words

  • FOB (Free On Board): the seller delivers the car on board the vessel at the Chinese port and pays Chinese export clearance. The buyer pays sea freight, insurance and everything after. Craveuo quotes delivered to your door (DAP) by default, and FOB on request.
  • CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): the price includes freight and insurance to the destination port. Under Incoterms 2020 the seller must buy at least basic cover (Institute Cargo Clauses C) for at least 110% of the invoice value (SeaRates, secondary summary). Customs in most countries use CIF as the base for duty and VAT.
  • Landed price: CIF plus duty, VAT, other taxes, clearance and local fees, until the car is ready to register. This is the number a buyer should compare with local prices.
  • Export side: battery-electric passenger cars need an export licence from 1 Jan 2026 (MOFCOM announcement No. 54 of 2025; official text not linked here). The authorised exporter handles it, so it is not a buyer cost line.

Step 1: sea freight

Two methods are common.

  • Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo): the car is driven onto a car-carrier ship. Forwarder pages quote about USD 1,000 to 1,800 per car (general), USD 800 to 2,500 (to Poland) and USD 1,200 to 2,000 (to Algeria). Welltrans, Guazi and other vendors, 2026. RoRo is usually preferred for EVs, though capacity is tight (CarNewsChina, 6 Jul 2026).
  • Container: about USD 3,800 to 5,000 for two cars sharing a 40-foot container, or about USD 1,900 to 2,500 per car (Welltrans, vendor page). It protects the car better and gives more route choice, but containers are 8 to 12 days slower on one corridor.

We use USD 1,000 to 2,500 per car as a working range. Rates by route are to be confirmed with a forwarder quote.

Battery rule

Since 1 Jan 2026 the IMDG Code (amendment 42-24) requires vehicles with lithium-ion batteries to be declared as UN3556, Class 9 dangerous goods (Britannia P&I; Arkas Line, Apr 2026). Tell the forwarder the exact battery type. Plug-in hybrids: ask the forwarder how to declare them.

Step 2: insurance

Cover is normally written on CIF value plus 10%. One insurer illustration shows 0.15% for all-risks cover (ICC A), and a forwarder guide says 0.30% to 0.50% is typical for ocean containers (Allianz Malaysia product sheet; GoFreight). We use 0.15% to 0.50%, which is about USD 50 to 180 on this car.

Step 3: from FOB to landed price (worked example)

Assumptions: FOB USD 30,000; freight USD 1,000 to 2,500; insurance 0.15% to 0.50% on 110% of FOB plus freight; illustrative duty 5% and VAT 15% (not any real country); clearance and local fees USD 300 to 1,000 (our assumption, unsourced).

Some countries add excise, recycling or green taxes. Others exempt EVs from duty. Check each line with a licensed customs broker.

Step 4: what three countries actually charge

We reused the figures from our country guides. They assume a USD 30,000 CIF battery-electric car, so they exclude freight, brokers and registration, and they rise with a higher CIF value.

  • Georgia

Taxes on USD 30,000 CIF: about USD 7,170 (5% duty + 18% VAT), or only a processing fee in a low case

    Share of CIF: about 24%

Source and date: WC Shipping, 2 Jun 2026 (vendor); AutoBridge, 4 Jul 2026

  • Uzbekistan

Taxes on USD 30,000 CIF: about USD 7,200 to 7,600 (0% duty, 12% VAT, recycling fee)

Share of CIF: 24% to 25%

Source and date: Kun.uz, 21 May 2025; Tez Motors, 19 Jun 2026 (vendor)

  • Egypt

Taxes on USD 30,000 CIF: about USD 4,500 now; about USD 6,225 if a proposed 5% duty is enacted

Share of CIF: 15% to 21%

Source and date: EnterpriseAM, 19 Jul and 12 Aug 2026

Sources conflict in Georgia and Uzbekistan, and Egypt's duty may change. Chile, for comparison, comes to about USD 5,700 (if the reported 0% China FTA duty applies) or USD 7,842 (at the 6% general rate), per our Chile guide.

Because duty and VAT are charged on CIF, a higher freight bill raises taxes too.

Common questions

What is the difference between FOB and CIF for a car?
FOB ends the seller's duty at the Chinese port. CIF adds sea freight and insurance to the destination port, and customs usually tax the CIF value.
How much does it cost to ship an EV from China?
About USD 1,000 to 2,500 per car by sea in the forwarder quotes we found. Get a live quote for your port.
Why are EVs shipped as dangerous goods?
The lithium-ion battery puts the car in Class 9, declared as UN3556 under the IMDG Code since 1 Jan 2026.
Is RoRo or container better for an EV?
RoRo is usually cheaper per car. A container costs more but protects the car and offers more routes.
What is the total landed price of a USD 30,000 FOB EV?
Roughly USD 36,000 to 41,000 including freight, insurance, taxes and local fees. Your country's tax rate decides where you fall.
Does Craveuo handle customs clearance abroad?
Not ourselves: by default the car is delivered to your door (DAP) and a licensed customs agent we recommend clears it; you pay the import duties and taxes. If you prefer, we sell FOB China and you use your own broker.
