How much range does an electric car lose in winter? (2026)

Quick answer

Near 0°C, plan on about 20% less range than in mild weather. At about -7°C, plan on 30% to 40% less with the heater on. The loss is temporary: range comes back when the weather warms. Most of it goes on heating the cabin, so heating the car while it is plugged in makes a real difference.

What the tests found

  • US Department of Energy

Conditions: Cold weather, mixed driving, heater on

Result: Range can drop by 41%

  • US Department of Energy

    Conditions: 20°F (-7°C) against 75°F (24°C), heater off

    Result: Range about 12% lower

  • AAA, May 2026

    Conditions: 20°F (-7°C) against 75°F (24°C)

Result: Range 39% lower on average

  • Recurrent, November 2025

Conditions: More than 30,000 US cars, 0°C

Result: About 78% of maximum range

  • Recurrent, November 2025

    Conditions: Same cars, -7°C

Result: About 70% of maximum range

  • Geotab

    Conditions: 5.2 million trips, 4,200 cars, -15°C

Result: About 54% of rated range

The numbers differ because the methods differ. Laboratory tests and real-world fleet data do not measure the same thing, and each uses its own baseline. Models differ too. In Recurrent's data the strongest cars kept 88% at 0°C and the weakest 69%. None of the models Recurrent ranked is from a Chinese brand.

Why range drops

What to do

  1. Warm the car while it is plugged in. The Department of Energy and AAA both give this advice.
  2. Use seat and steering wheel heaters. They save energy compared with heating the cabin.
  3. Keep the car plugged in at home if you can. Recurrent suggests a 70% to 80% charge limit while it stays connected. Check your manual, because some cars need different limits. See our guide to charge limits.
  4. Navigate to the charger in the car. Recurrent says this lets the car condition the battery on the way. Expect longer charging until the battery warms up.
  5. Charge more often on long trips. AAA advises this, and mapping chargers before you leave.
  6. Reduce regeneration on ice. Recurrent advises this for icy roads.
  7. Prepare the car. BYD's Atto 3 manual (printed p. 109) says to check coolant is freeze-proof, use anti-freeze washer fluid, and keep the 12V battery fully charged, because its capacity is lower in the cold.

Snow chains

Rules differ by car, so read your manual. For the Atto 3, BYD says (printed pp. 101 to 102) to fit chains to the front wheels, use thin ones, ask a BYD dealer or service provider first, and stay below 30 km/h. Take them off on clear roads. For tyre load ratings, see our tyre guide.

Why charging is slower in the cold

Recurrent says the battery system restricts charging until the battery is warm enough. It describes this as protection against lithium plating, which can cause long-term wear. So a slow charge on a cold morning is usually the car protecting itself. If it stays slow after the battery has warmed up, ask a workshop to look at it.

Common questions

Does cold weather damage an EV battery?
Recurrent says winter range loss is temporary, with no long-term harm to the battery. BYD does advise against leaving the Atto 3 below -30°C for over 24 hours (printed p. 97).
What temperature range does BYD recommend for the Atto 3?
-10°C to 40°C (printed p. 92). In cold weather it also suggests parking in a warmer place, such as an underground garage, for long stops.
Should I buy a car with a heat pump?
If you drive often near freezing, it helps. AAA suggests considering one. The benefit shrinks in deep cold.
Is the range on the screen correct in winter?
Treat it as an estimate. Leave more margin, and charge sooner on long trips.
Is the official range figure a winter figure?
No. CLTC and WLTP are not winter road tests. See how tests compare with CLTC.
