Do electric cars wear out tyres faster? (2026)
CRAVEUO EV Export · Sources last checked 2026-11-01 · General information, not safety advice. Your owner's manual and door label come first. Nothing here is a promise or a quote.
Quick answer
Yes, tyres on electric cars generally wear faster. Michelin says up to 20% faster than on combustion cars, and J.D. Power says the same thing without a number: the weight and instant torque are the cause. You can slow it by keeping the pressure right, rotating tyres on schedule and accelerating gently. When you replace tyres, match or exceed the load rating on the original tyres.
How much faster
EV tyres can wear up to 20% faster than on combustion cars and trucks
EV tyres naturally wear faster due to weight and torque. Based on a survey of 31,414 owners, so it measures experience, not tread

"Up to 20%" is a ceiling from a tyre maker, not a measured average. We looked for a controlled wear test from a government or research body and did not find one we could open. Results for your car depend on the tyre, your roads and how you drive.
What XL and HL mean
A tyre has to carry the weight of the car, and batteries add weight. Tyre makers use load marks on the sidewall:
SL
Meaning: Standard Load
Example: 245/40 R19: 670 kg (load index 94)
Source: Continental
XL
Meaning: Extra Load
Example: 245/40 R19: 750 kg (load index 98)
Source: Continental
HL
Meaning: High Load
Example: 245/40 R19: 825 kg (load index 101)
Source: Continental
| Mark | Meaning | Example: 245/40 R19 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SL | Standard Load | 670 kg (load index 94) | Continental |
| XL | Extra Load | 750 kg (load index 98) | Continental |
| HL | High Load | 825 kg (load index 101) | Continental |
HL arrived in 2021, largely because of electric and hybrid cars. Continental puts the mark before the size on the sidewall. Michelin calls HL "Heavy Load", and Continental and Pirelli call it "High Load". It is the same mark.
Pirelli says its HL tyre carries 20% more than a standard tyre and 6% to 9% more than an XL of the same size.
Replacing tyres
- Read the size and load index on your current tyres, and compare with the door label or manual.
- Match or exceed the load rating. Michelin warns that a standard tyre on a car that needs reinforced ones would be overloaded, handle poorly and wear faster. BYD says tyres must be made and sized to fit the vehicle (printed p. 170).
- Check availability before you buy. Your size may not be stocked everywhere, so ask a local tyre shop what they can get.
- Expect some trade-offs. Reinforced tyres are heavier and stiffer, with higher rolling resistance, so ride and range can change slightly.
Pressure
Low pressure costs range and tread. BYD says it increases energy consumption and wear (printed p. 98).
- How often. BYD says at least once a month (printed p. 157). The UK Highway Code says weekly, before setting off.
- When. Measure cold. BYD says hot tyres read 30 to 40 kPa higher (printed p. 171), and warns not to deflate them to reach the cold figure.
- What figure. Use the label on the driver's door frame.
Rotation
Intervals vary by maker:
- BYD Atto 3: every 10,000 km (printed p. 157).
- XPENG's Australian checklist: about every 20,000 km, and it says the manual takes precedence.
Your manual gives the rotation pattern.
When to replace
UK
Minimum tread: 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters
Source: Highway Code
US
Minimum tread: 2/32 inch (about 1.6 mm), the NHTSA replacement point
Source: Ford, citing NHTSA
Australia
Minimum tread: 1.5 mm
Source: XPENG Australia
| Place | Minimum tread | Source |
|---|---|---|
| UK | 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters | Highway Code |
| US | 2/32 inch (about 1.6 mm), the NHTSA replacement point | Ford, citing NHTSA |
| Australia | 1.5 mm | XPENG Australia |
Check your own country's law. A legal minimum is not a safety target. Ford suggests asking about replacement at 4/32 inch or earlier for better traction in rain or snow. The small bars in the tread grooves show when a tyre is worn out.
How to make tyres last longer
- Accelerate gently. Torque is one of the causes J.D. Power names.
- Keep wheels aligned and avoid kerbs (printed p. 98).
- Don't overload the car.
- Check for cuts, bulges and uneven wear at each pressure check.
