The story behind the name
Elon Musk picked the model letters so that Tesla's line-up of S, 3, X and Y would spell 'S3XY' (Ford owned the 'Model E' name). Giga Shanghai began building the Model Y in 2021 and supplies China, Asia-Pacific and right-hand-drive markets including the UK; a heavily facelifted version code-named 'Juniper' arrived in 2025.
