About the BYD Sealion 07
One-line positioning
The Sealion 07 EV, sold abroad as the Sealion 7, is a coupe-styled mid-size electric SUV and the first car on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 Evo. BYD launched it in China on 10 May 2024 and pitched it against the Tesla Model Y1; Europe saw it at the Paris show in October 20243. At 4.83 m it is 8 cm longer than a Model Y2. Since mid-2026 the electric version has been withdrawn from China retail and is built for export9.

Exterior design
The shape is a sloping fastback roof with a roof-edge spoiler, a full-width tail-light strip and black wheel-arch cladding. BYD modelled it on its Ocean X concept1, and Wolfgang Egger led the design team3. In the show photos, the slim LED headlights, the clean tailgate and a diffuser-style rear bumper stand out.

Interior and space
Inside is a rotating touchscreen, 15.6 inches in most listings (one launch article says 15.4), and a 10.25-inch driver display34. The centre console has a wireless phone pad and a crystal-style gear selector. European cars have electrically adjustable, ventilated front seats on all trims4. The boot holds 520 litres, 1,789 litres with the rear seats folded, plus a 58-litre front boot5. electrive found the seats comfortable and rear space adequate despite the sloping roof; towing is up to 750 kg (RWD) or 1,500 kg (AWD)2.

Battery, range and charging
CLTC (the China test cycle, China-market cars): 550 km with the 71.8 kWh battery, 610 km for the 80.64 kWh rear-drive and 550 km for the 80.64 kWh all-wheel-drive; BYD quoted 10-80% in 25 minutes1. WLTP (the cycle used in Europe and many export markets): 482 km (82.5 kWh RWD), 456 km (82.5 kWh AWD) and 502 km (91.3 kWh AWD)2. The two cycles differ, so the numbers cannot be compared. Fast charging peaks at 150 kW (10-80% in 32 minutes) on the 82.5 kWh battery and 230 kW (24 minutes) on the 91.3 kWh battery; AC charging is 11 kW25. On a short test drive electrive saw 19-25 kWh/100 km and advised against firm conclusions2. Green NCAP's July 2026 update gives 4.5 stars, with fast charging rated poor8.

Driver assistance and cockpit
China-market cars use BYD's camera-based DiPilot 100 system, the entry tier of its God's Eye family110. For Europe, Euro NCAP's assessment scored speed assistance 2.5 of 3, lane support 2.5 of 3 and occupant status monitoring 1.9 of 36. Software is the usual complaint: electrive said it needs improvement, and its charging-station filter offers only "Any" or ">=50 kW" and lists connector types that do not apply in Europe2.

Safety
Euro NCAP, published 9 April 2025: five stars, with adult occupant 87%, child occupant 93%, vulnerable road users 76% and safety assist 79%. The car tested was the Comfort 4x2 in left-hand drive; the rating also applies to the Design and Excellence 4x4 and to left- and right-hand drive6. Side barrier and side pole tests earned full marks and frontal protection scored 12 of 16. Rear-passenger chest protection in the full-width test was rated weak, and pedestrian and cyclist head protection was poor at the windscreen pillars6. ANCAP in Australia also gave five stars the same day, with 87%, 93%, 76% and 78% safety assist7.

Who it suits and rivals
Against the Tesla Model Y, the Sealion 7 is longer and offers a 390 kW all-wheel-drive version with a claimed 4.5 seconds to 100 km/h; electrive could not verify BYD's own faster figure2. At launch in Germany the three trims cost EUR 47,990, 53,990 and 58,9902. It fits buyers who want a roomy, quick, well-equipped electric SUV and can live with software that reviewers call less polished. It fits less well a buyer who ranks software and driver-assistance polish first.

Export notes
Steering: Euro NCAP's rating covers left- and right-hand drive6; the right-hand-drive car sells in Australia, with 4,730 delivered in June 20269. Charging port: export cars use a Type 2 AC socket and a CCS2 DC port5, while China-market cars use GB/T, which does not plug into European chargers without an adapter11. Software language: the language set depends on the market version, so a car built for another market has to be checked for your language and local services before an order. Supply: the Sealion 7 can be bought new through CRAVEUO from a licensed Chinese export company named in the contract; you pay only after signing.

The story behind the name
The Sealion 07 EV launched in China on 10 May 2024 as the first model on BYD's e-Platform 3. 0 Evo. Like the Seal and Dolphin, it belongs to the 'Ocean' series named after sea creatures; abroad it drops the zero and is sold as the Sealion 7.
