Which premium Chinese cars can ship new to Nigeria

Body type and powertrain only. Versions, batteries and colours are on each model page. Some models are sold in more than one powertrain, and in Nigeria the powertrain decides the duty class, so name the version you want in your request.

How Nigeria's rules treat each powertrain

Two press reports of the Nigeria Customs Service guidelines give the same picture [1][2]. The reports give no start date, no rate and no application steps for the certificate. Confirm all three with a licensed customs agent.

The certificate comes from the Federal Ministry of Finance. Apply to the Ministry directly, and be wary of middlemen who ask for money upfront (our advice) [1].

The Single Window page also lists VAT at 7.5% where applicable, a CISS levy of 1% of CIF value and a National Automotive Council levy [3]. We found no source saying whether the last two apply to exempt electric cars. A Green Tax from 2026-07-01 applies to cars of 2,000 cc and above, and Legit.ng says electric vehicles are not subject to it [4]. Ask your agent whether it applies to plug-in and range-extender cars with a petrol engine.

What the price is made of

Structure only. Your written quote is the price. The trade term in the quote says which lines it covers. Read FOB, CIF and landed price before you compare quotes.

1. Price of the car in China. The licensed exporter names the model, version and colour.
2. Export costs in China. Declaration and delivery to the port.
3. Sea freight, and insurance if the term includes it. Battery-electric cars are declared as UN 3556, Class 9 dangerous goods, mandatory since 2026-01-01 [8]. Ask your forwarder how a plug-in hybrid or range-extender is declared.
4. Customs duty. Zero for a car that qualifies for the exemption certificate. Otherwise Nigerian customs assesses it.
5. VAT and levies. See the list above.
6. Clearance. A licensed customs agent files for you. The Single Window page lists Form M, a Pre-Arrival Assessment Report, SONCAP and NESREA approvals [3].
7. Registration. We found no official source for the steps after clearance, so we do not describe them.

Inspection: before you pay, and in Nigeria

Before you pay

You get the VIN and a walk-around video of the real car, filmed the same day, before the deposit. Step 3 below.

In Nigeria

The minister said on 2026-03-31 that all new and used vehicles need VehCAP certification before import clearance, registration or licensing [5]. A later statement, reported on 2026-04-07, says cars that arrive without VehCAP go through regular clearance, then destination inspection and conformity checks, with a 90-day transition window after full commencement [6]. Ask your agent which route applies when your car arrives.

Steering side, charging and shipping

• Steering side. These are left-hand-drive China-market cars. Legit.ng (2026-08-18) says imported cars for normal registration are generally required to be left-hand drive. The Single Window page (updated 2026-03-19) says only right-hand-drive vehicles are permitted [3][4]. If your agent confirms right-hand drive only, these cars do not fit.
• Charging. China-market cars use the GB/T plug, AC and DC [11]. Our Nigeria guide states no connector standard, so ask the exporter which inlet your version has, and plan an adapter or a home charger.
• Shipping. Grimaldi started what Cyprus Shipping News called the first direct ro-ro service between China and Nigeria in July 2024. Its first ship unloaded new cars from Shanghai at Tin Can Island port in Lagos. It ran monthly, 27 days from Shanghai to Lagos [7]. We found no 2026 schedule. Ask your forwarder for current sailings. We do not promise a delivery date.

How buying works

1. Written quote. Send your country, model, version and colour. The licensed exporter's quote names the exact car, the trade term and what the price includes.
2. Contract. You sign with the licensed exporter named in the quote. The contract names your destination country. We take no payment before it is signed.
3. VIN and walk-around video. Before you pay, you get the VIN and a walk-around video of the real car, filmed the same day, with the VIN plate visible.
4. 30% deposit. Paid after signing, to the company account named in the contract only.
5. 70% before shipping. Paid to the same account.
6. Export declaration. The licensed exporter declares the car in China.
7. Bill of lading, clearance and registration. The carrier issues the bill of lading when the car is loaded. A licensed Nigerian customs agent then clears the car, and you pay what Nigerian customs assesses. Registration is up to Nigeria.

Check that the seller on the contract, the exporter on the customs papers and the owner of the bank account are the same name (our advice). Warranty is the maker's, in writing. CRAVEUO EV Export does not promise warranty. Get the terms and a workshop address in writing before you pay.
