Exports go through a Chinese export company (export agency, named in the contract), which handles the export licence, customs, inspection and shipping. Since 2026 pure-electric passenger cars need a Chinese export licence.

The story behind the name
The '3' fills the 'E' in Tesla's 'S3XY' line-up because Ford held the Model E name. Giga Shanghai, China's first wholly foreign-owned car plant, delivered its first Model 3s in December 2019; the 'Highland' facelift of 2023 was developed with Shanghai as the lead factory.
