How to charge a China-market EV abroad: GB/T, CCS2, Type 2, CHAdeMO and NACS (2026)
CRAVEUO EV Export · Sources last checked 2026-10-31 · General information, not legal or electrical advice. Nothing here is a promise or a quote.
Quick answer
A China-market EV uses two separate GB/T connectors, one for AC and one for DC. Neither fits a Type 2, CCS2, CHAdeMO or NACS plug. AC can work through an adapter that is tested and accepted by the carmaker. DC fast charging is harder, because GB/T and CCS also talk to the car in different ways. At 220 to 240 V, a home charger is the simple route. At 100 to 127 V, get the car's input range in writing first. A version built with your local socket avoids the problem, if one exists and you can get it through a local channel.
How the plugs differ
GB/T 20234 (China)
AC or DC: Both, through two separate connectors
Physical shape: AC 7 pins, DC 9 pins. DC up to 1,500 V and 800 A in the 2023 edition
How it talks to the car: CAN, under GB/T 27930
Type 2 (IEC 62196)
AC or DC: AC
Physical shape: Not compatible with GB/T without a device
How it talks to the car: Signal on the plug
CCS2
AC or DC: AC and DC
Physical shape: One port for both: the Type 2 shape with DC pins added
How it talks to the car: Power-line communication, covered by ISO 15118-3
CHAdeMO
AC or DC: DC only
Physical shape: Its own connector, mostly on Japanese makes
How it talks to the car: CAN, but at 500 kHz against 250 kHz for GB/T
NACS (SAE J3400)
AC or DC: AC and DC
Physical shape: The same pins for both
How it talks to the car: Not checked for this guide
| Standard | AC or DC | Physical shape | How it talks to the car |
|---|---|---|---|
| GB/T 20234 (China) | Both, through two separate connectors | AC 7 pins, DC 9 pins. DC up to 1,500 V and 800 A in the 2023 edition | CAN, under GB/T 27930 |
| Type 2 (IEC 62196) | AC | Not compatible with GB/T without a device | Signal on the plug |
| CCS2 | AC and DC | One port for both: the Type 2 shape with DC pins added | Power-line communication, covered by ISO 15118-3 |
| CHAdeMO | DC only | Its own connector, mostly on Japanese makes | CAN, but at 500 kHz against 250 kHz for GB/T |
| NACS (SAE J3400) | AC and DC | The same pins for both | Not checked for this guide |
So shape is only half the problem. A GB/T car and a CCS2 charger also speak different signals. We read that as meaning a DC adapter must translate between them, not just fit.
Adapters: what officials say
We found no official approval for any DC GB/T adapter. What we found is general:
- Hong Kong. The Transport Department's note says to consult the carmaker first, and to check the adapter was type tested to the standards on both sides: GB/T 20234, and IEC 61851 and IEC 62196. For outdoor use it asks for IP54 or above. It talks about AC at slow or medium speed.
- New Zealand. WorkSafe lists any EV adapter not supplied by the vehicle or charger maker as unsafe, along with extension leads and cascaded supply leads.
- Chile. A GB/T AC car must carry an approved adapter. See our Chile guide.
For speed limits on DC, see the note in our flagship saloon comparison: an adapter can cap a car far below its rated power. We name no adapter brand, because we found no independent test.
China version and export version
In the cases below, the maker fits the local socket to cars sold in that market. The same model in China stays GB/T.

Most EVs in Hong Kong use Type 2 and CCS2 too. Our list stops at what we could source; other brands may have done the same. China-market cars on our site use GB/T.

"GB/T chargers common?" says No where our data says a China-market car needs an adapter or an export version.
Home charging
Voltage
China's mains is 220 V at 50 Hz. IEC lists Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Chile, Peru and Thailand at 220 V, the UAE and Nigeria at 230 V, and Saudi Arabia at 220 and 230 V. At that range the socket is the main issue, not the voltage. Peru and Saudi Arabia run at 60 Hz, so ask about frequency.
100 to 127 V
IEC lists Mexico at 127 V, the USA at 120 V and Japan at 100 V. The US Level 1 outlet is 120 V, and Level 2 is 240 V at home. We found no maker statement that a China-market car charges at these lower voltages. Do not assume it. Ask for the on-board charger's input range, or plan for a 240 V supply.
Phases
A Type 2 export car can use three phases: the Australian 7X lists 7 kW single-phase and 22 kW three-phase, and the D9 lists 11 kW three-phase. GB/T AC has three line pins, but a reference source says it is single-phase in current use. If your car is single-phase, a three-phase supply adds no speed.
Wiring
One official example: New Zealand's guidelines ask for a dedicated circuit at home and a Type B RCD of 30 mA or less. Your country's rules decide, so use a licensed electrician.
Four questions for the seller
- Which sockets does this exact car have? Send photos of them and of the build plate.
- What does the on-board charger accept: voltage, frequency, phases and current?
- Which adapter does the carmaker accept, in writing, and where is its type-test certificate?
- Who pays if charging equipment damages the car, and does an adapter affect the warranty?
Send your country, model and version through the inquiry form. We tell you whether we can supply that car before any contract. Nothing is paid before it is signed, and payment goes only to the company account on the invoice.
