How much range does an electric car lose in winter? (2026)

Quick answer
Near 0°C, plan on about 20% less range than in mild weather. At about -7°C, plan on 30% to 40% less with the heater on. The loss is temporary: range comes back when the weather warms. Most of it goes on heating the cabin, so heating the car while it is plugged in makes a real difference.
What the tests found
Conditions: Cold weather, mixed driving, heater on
Result: Range can drop by 41%
Conditions: 20°F (-7°C) against 75°F (24°C), heater off
Result: Range about 12% lower
Conditions: 20°F (-7°C) against 75°F (24°C)
Result: Range 39% lower on average
Conditions: More than 30,000 US cars, 0°C
Result: About 78% of maximum range
Conditions: Same cars, -7°C
Result: About 70% of maximum range
Conditions: 5.2 million trips, 4,200 cars, -15°C
Result: About 54% of rated range
| Source | Conditions | Result |
|---|---|---|
| US Department of Energy | Cold weather, mixed driving, heater on | Range can drop by 41% |
| US Department of Energy | 20°F (-7°C) against 75°F (24°C), heater off | Range about 12% lower |
| AAA, May 2026 | 20°F (-7°C) against 75°F (24°C) | Range 39% lower on average |
| Recurrent, November 2025 | More than 30,000 US cars, 0°C | About 78% of maximum range |
| Recurrent, November 2025 | Same cars, -7°C | About 70% of maximum range |
| Geotab | 5.2 million trips, 4,200 cars, -15°C | About 54% of rated range |
The numbers differ because the methods differ. Laboratory tests and real-world fleet data do not measure the same thing, and each uses its own baseline. Models differ too. In Recurrent's data the strongest cars kept 88% at 0°C and the weakest 69%. None of the models Recurrent ranked is from a Chinese brand.
Chinese cars in winter tests
Two examples, both from independent testers:
- BYD Seal RWD. ADAC measured 294 km in its 2025 winter test, against 570 km WLTP. That test was reported as a simulated Munich to Berlin trip at an average of 0°C.
- Aion V. Autohome measured 259.6 km at -25°C to -20°C, with the cabin set to 23°C, against 520 km CLTC.
These are hard tests, and each compares against a different official cycle. For more results, see our table of independent range tests.
Why range drops
- Cabin heat. The US Department of Energy says about two-thirds of the extra energy heats the cabin. An electric car has no engine heat to reuse.
- Heater type. Recurrent found a heat pump adds about 10% range at 0°C. The gain shrinks as the temperature nears -18°C.
- Battery type. XPENG says LFP cells can become sluggish in deep winter and charge more slowly, and it describes NMC as stronger in the cold. That is one maker's description.
What to do
- Warm the car while it is plugged in. The Department of Energy and AAA both give this advice.
- Use seat and steering wheel heaters. They save energy compared with heating the cabin.
- Keep the car plugged in at home if you can. Recurrent suggests a 70% to 80% charge limit while it stays connected. Check your manual, because some cars need different limits. See our guide to charge limits.
- Navigate to the charger in the car. Recurrent says this lets the car condition the battery on the way. Expect longer charging until the battery warms up.
- Charge more often on long trips. AAA advises this, and mapping chargers before you leave.
- Reduce regeneration on ice. Recurrent advises this for icy roads.
- Prepare the car. BYD's Atto 3 manual (printed p. 109) says to check coolant is freeze-proof, use anti-freeze washer fluid, and keep the 12V battery fully charged, because its capacity is lower in the cold.
Snow chains
Rules differ by car, so read your manual. For the Atto 3, BYD says (printed pp. 101 to 102) to fit chains to the front wheels, use thin ones, ask a BYD dealer or service provider first, and stay below 30 km/h. Take them off on clear roads. For tyre load ratings, see our tyre guide.
Why charging is slower in the cold
Recurrent says the battery system restricts charging until the battery is warm enough. It describes this as protection against lithium plating, which can cause long-term wear. So a slow charge on a cold morning is usually the car protecting itself. If it stays slow after the battery has warmed up, ask a workshop to look at it.
