Size and seating

The M9 compared here has six seats, the GLS 450 seven and the short-wheelbase Range Rover SE five. The M9's 3,125 mm wheelbase is 128 mm longer than the Range Rover's and 10 mm shorter than the GLS's. The Range Rover is the widest and tallest of the three (2,047 mm and 1,867 mm); the M9 sits between the other two in height.

Powertrain, range and charging

The M9 compared here is a range extender (EREV) with a 75.4 kWh battery. AITO rates its electric range at 422 km on the CLTC cycle and gives DC fast charging from 20% to 80% in 15 minutes. AITO's configuration page did not give a combined system power figure that we could confirm.

The two rivals are petrol mild hybrids, so electric range and DC charging do not apply. Mercedes-Benz gives the GLS 450 280 kW plus a 15 kW electric boost; we did not find a confirmed power figure for the Range Rover version on Land Rover's pages.

About range figures

CLTC is China's test cycle; WLTP is the cycle used in Europe and many other markets. They are different tests, so a CLTC range and a WLTP range cannot be compared directly. If you compare the M9 with any car rated on WLTP, do not set that figure against the M9's 422 km CLTC as if they were measured the same way.

• Seats: zero-gravity front seats and second-row right seat; rows one and two heated, ventilated and with massage.
• Screens: 12.3" driver display, two 17.2" 3.4K screens (centre and passenger) and a dual-focal AR head-up display.
• Lidar: six units: an 896-line main unit, four solid-state units and one in the cabin.
• Suspension: dual-chamber air springs, with 800V fully active suspension as an option.
• Audio and driver assistance: a 39-speaker, 2,920 W system and ADS 5 driver assistance.
