Can you import a Chinese EV into the EU for personal use? (2026)
Esta página está em inglês.
CRAVEUO EV Export · Sources last checked 2026-10-29
Quick answer
Yes, as a private buyer importing for your own use, but expect extra duty and paperwork. A new battery-electric car pays 10% EU customs duty plus a countervailing duty set by maker, up to 45.3% in total (HK TID circular, 2024-10-29; CnEVPost, 2026-10-09). A China-market car usually has no EU certificate of conformity (COC), so it needs individual vehicle approval in your country (SCL Rotterdam, 2026-03-27). Get local legal and customs advice before you order.

Countervailing duty by maker
The countervailing duty applies only to new battery-electric passenger cars; the HK TID circular quotes the product as "New battery electric vehicles". Confirm with a customs adviser which rate applies to your maker; the 20.7% rate for XPeng, Leapmotor, NIO and Chery comes only from secondary sources (China EV Mart).
Plug-in hybrids pay 10% today. On 2026-10-09 the EU and China reported a "consensus" on hybrids; a document seen by Bloomberg describes a quota of about 350,000 cars a year, from 1 December at the earliest (Reuters via US News, 2026-10-09; AM). No official notice was found, so do not plan an order around it.
Individual vehicle approval for a Chinese EV: Netherlands RDW
A COC is issued per VIN, and some Chinese makers do not issue one for grey imports (SCL Rotterdam, 2026-03-27). Without a COC the car needs individual approval: in Germany under StVZO section 21, in the Netherlands through the RDW, which charges about €1,200–2,000. Lights may need to be modified.
Charging, warranty and brand protection
- Charging: China-market cars use GB/T; Europe uses CCS2. You need an adapter, and DC fast charging may be unreliable (electrive, 2026-06).
- Warranty: valid only in China, and local workshops may lack manuals and parts (SCL Rotterdam, 2026).
- Brand protection: at least one Chinese carmaker has taken legal action against a grey importer in Germany and sought EU-wide border seizures (elektroquatsch, 2026-06-21). Our internal research notes that reselling China-market cars commercially may infringe EU trademark rights. This is one reason we sell only to private buyers.
Used Chinese EVs
One platform, CEVM, claims used cars pay neither the battery-electric countervailing duty nor count toward the hybrid quota (CarNewsChina, 2026-10-22). How "used" is defined was not found in any Commission text. We do not rely on this claim.
Our conditions for EU buyers
- You buy as a private person, for your own use, and sign a written declaration that the car is not for resale.
- We quote the FOB China price only.
- You are the importer of record and handle EU customs, VAT and vehicle approval.
- Customs may detain the car; the quote says so.
- The licensed Chinese export company named in the contract signs and exports. Nothing is paid before the contract is signed. We do not guarantee a delivery date or registration.
Zeekr 8X import to Bulgaria
A private buyer in Bulgaria can get a quote for the Zeekr 8X under the conditions above. EU approval is separate and is the buyer's responsibility. We did not check whether the 8X is officially sold in Europe: check this before you order, as it affects approval, warranty and brand-protection risk.
Send your country, model and version through the inquiry form.
