Can you import a Chinese EV into Tunisia? (2026)

Quick answer

Passenger cars are under import quotas in Tunisia. An importer asks the Ministry of Trade and Export Development for an allotment and a licence, the quota covers cars for commercial sale, and private buyers still cannot import freely because of strict foreign-exchange controls (trade.gov, 2026-02-26). So settle who the importer is before anything else. Once that is settled, 2026 taxes are favourable: the 2026 Finance Law gives electric cars a full customs exemption and 7% VAT, and halves registration fees (La Presse, 2026-04-25), and the 7% rate runs to 31 December 2028 (WMC, 2026-03-26). We read nothing saying electric cars are outside the quota.

Who can import a car from China into Tunisia?

Passenger cars are under import quotas, set partly by the Tunisian-made components an importer uses. The importer asks the Ministry of Trade and Export Development for an allotment and a licence. The quota covers cars for commercial sale, and consumers still cannot freely import privately because of strict foreign-exchange controls (trade.gov, 2026-02-26). A La Presse article of 2025-11-06 reported that few Tunisians buy directly in China and suggested going through authorised importers. Ask customs or a licensed broker who must appear as importer before you sign.

Duty, consumption tax and VAT in 2026

The 2026 Finance Law exempts battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids from customs duty and consumption tax, and cuts VAT to 7% (WMC, 2026-02-24). Ask your broker to confirm that your exact version falls in the exempt category, especially for a plug-in hybrid or range-extender. Other fees on arrival are not in our sources, so ask for a full estimate before you pay the balance.

How an order works

  1. Choose model, version and colour; ask which charging inlet the export version has (China-market cars use GB/T).
  2. Get a quote from the licensed Chinese export company named in the contract.
  3. Ask a Tunisian broker who may import the car and which permits you need.
  4. Sign the contract. Nothing is paid before it is signed, and payment goes only to the company account on the invoice.
  5. The exporter declares the car in China and books sea freight. We do not guarantee a delivery date.
  6. The broker clears the car; you pay the import taxes and the car is delivered to your door (DAP).

Domande frequenti

Are Chinese EVs duty-free in Tunisia?
Electric cars are, under the 2026 Finance Law (La Presse, 2026-04-25). One report also lists plug-in hybrids (WMC, 2026-02-24), so confirm your version. The import quota still applies.
What VAT applies?
7% instead of 19% (WMC, 2026-02-24).
Can I import as a private person?
Not freely: foreign-exchange controls limit private imports, and the quota covers cars for commercial sale (trade.gov, 2026-02-26). Ask a licensed broker what is open to you.
Do you sell used cars?
No, new cars only.
