How to import a Chinese electric car into Suriname (2026)
Questa pagina è in inglese.

Quick answer
A pure-electric car can pay no import duty in Suriname under a ministerial decision published in the State Gazette, but the conditions are tight. The car must be fully electric, worth no more than USD 40,000 on a cost, insurance and freight basis, and imported together with its charging accessories. The decision lasts one year from 1 March 2026, so by our count it ends on 28 February 2027 unless renewed. Hybrids lost this relief. VAT was not waived under the 2024 version, and we found nothing that changes that. Most cars in Suriname are right-hand drive.
We have no confirmed right-hand-drive supply for this market, so a price shown elsewhere on this site for this market is a list estimate, not an offer.

Duty on a car above USD 40,000 is the main unknown. The two figures come from non-official guides and do not agree.
Details that catch buyers out
- Charging accessories. The decision says the car must be imported with its charging accessories. Ask your customs broker what proof customs wants.
- Tariff code. The annex lists 8703.90.00 under CET 2007 for passenger cars. Newer tariff versions use other codes, so confirm which one the declaration should use.
- Timing. Duty relief needs the decision to be in force. We found no renewal for after February 2027, and a car arriving later may not qualify.
- Full electric only. The 2025 decision covered hybrids. The current one does not.
Who can import and what is banned
Used cars
Staatsbesluit 2006 no. 100 bans used passenger cars over 8 years, with exceptions for returning residents and collector cars
2026 change

Permit
Used cars are on the negative list that needs an import licence, and the ministry says permits must be obtained before goods are loaded, per press
New cars
A 2023 report said vehicle imports need a permit, with a fee, from 3 April. We found no current official text for new cars
Private buyers
Not found. The ministry's 2025 form asks for a chamber of commerce number, but that form is for a one-time exception
Steering
Traffic drives on the left, and most cars are right-hand drive (Wikipedia). We found no official rule for left-hand-drive cars. China-market cars are left-hand drive

One dealer guide repeats the 8-year limit without an official source. The older US guide lists buses at 10 years; the ministry's notice says 15. This does not affect cars.
How an order works
- Ask the Ministry of Economic Affairs or a customs broker whether a permit applies to your new car and how a left-hand-drive car registers.
- Check the value limit and the 2027 end date with the tax office.
- Send your country, model and version through the inquiry form. We tell you whether we can supply that car before any contract.
- Get a written offer from the licensed Chinese export company named in the contract. Nothing is paid before it is signed, and payment goes only to the company account on the invoice.
- Your broker clears the car with its charging accessories, and you pay the VAT and fees assessed.
