How to import a Chinese electric car into Bosnia and Herzegovina (2026)

Questa pagina è in inglese.

CRAVEUO EV Export · Sources last checked 2026-11-01 · General information, not legal advice. We do not clear customs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nothing here is a promise or a quote.

Quick answer

Until 31 December 2026, a new electric car without preferential origin pays no customs duty in Bosnia and Herzegovina. VAT of 17% still applies. We found no extension for 2027, so check the date your car will clear. Every car also needs homologation, and the documents go into the customs step. An individual route exists, with a manufacturer's confirmation or a CoC, so the manufacturer's paperwork decides how far a China-market car can go.

Duty: a deadline on 31 December

The same guide says the relief needs a confirmation from the Foreign Trade Chamber that such a car is not made in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also says a car never registered is generally treated as new, with customs having the final word. We could not open the decision's PDF, so read Article 3 yourself or ask a broker.

The EU's extra duties on China-built cars (Regulation 2024/2754 (search excerpt, not opened)) do not apply. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not an EU member.

Homologation

The homologation rulebook says conformity papers go into the customs procedure (Article 10). So this is not a step for later. For type approval, it speaks of new cars imported to go on the market. A single car goes through individual vehicle homologation.

The individual-vehicle instruction (Official Gazette 46/19) asks for:

  • the car brought to a technical service for inspection;
  • an original manufacturer confirmation that the car meets the conditions. An authorised representative can issue it, in the country or abroad, and for some makes a contracted body can;
  • or a CoC for cars with EU whole-vehicle approval, whose data the representative must check through the homologation body;
  • proof of purchase, the customs document, and the manufacturer's technical data.

If the car needs more proof, the certificate can state that it must be tested under named UN regulations before first registration. The minimum technical requirements accept approvals from parties to the 1958 UN agreement. These texts date from before the 2020 rulebook, so check the current versions.

A local motoring site says individual homologation is possible without a European certificate, through a technical inspection at an authorised service. That is press, not an official ruling. The practical question is whether the manufacturer or a representative will sign the confirmation for a China-market car. We found no public answer.

Used cars, private buyers, steering

  • "New" in the rulebook

    Not registered, not used in traffic, and no older than 12 months. The customs relief may define it differently

  • Emission floor

    Euro 5 for used cars since 2019, per a commercial guide. It does not apply to pure-electric cars, by another guide

  • Proposal

    Euro 6 for used passenger cars, reported in September 2026 (search excerpt, not opened), with April 2027 quoted by press. It should not affect a pure-electric car, but confirm

  • Moving home

    Returning residents can get a homologation exception under Article 8, with conditions

  • Steering

    The Article 8 exception requires cars adapted to driving on the right. We found no general rule

  • Charging

    No official connector rule found

How an order works

  1. Ask a customs broker when your car can clear, and whether the relief will still apply.
  2. Ask a technical service what confirmation it accepts for your version.
  3. Ask the exporter whether the manufacturer or a representative can give that confirmation.
  4. Sign with the licensed Chinese export company. Nothing is paid before it is signed, and payment goes only to the company account on the invoice.
  5. Complete homologation and customs together, then register the car.
