Can you import a Chinese EV into Tunisia? (2026)

Esta página está en inglés.

Quick answer

Yes, and 2026 taxes are favourable. Under the 2026 Finance Law, battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids are exempt from customs duty and consumption tax, VAT falls from 19% to 7%, and the first-registration fee is halved (WMC, 2026-02-24). Whether an individual can import directly, and which permits apply, is decided by Tunisian customs — check with them or a licensed customs broker before you order.

Who can import a car from China into Tunisia?

Our sources do not say whether a private buyer can clear a car in their own name, or whether an annual quota applies. A La Presse article of 2025-11-06 reported that few Tunisians buy directly in China and suggested going through authorised importers. That is a press view, not an official rule. Ask customs or a licensed broker who must appear as importer before you sign.

Duty, consumption tax and VAT in 2026

The 2026 Finance Law exempts battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids from customs duty and consumption tax, and cuts VAT to 7% (WMC, 2026-02-24). Ask your broker to confirm that your exact version falls in the exempt category, especially for a plug-in hybrid or range-extender. Other fees on arrival are not in our sources, so ask for a full estimate before you pay the balance.

How an order works

  1. Choose model, version and colour; ask which charging inlet the export version has (China-market cars use GB/T).
  2. Get a quote from the licensed Chinese export company named in the contract.
  3. Ask a Tunisian broker who may import the car and which permits you need.
  4. Sign the contract. Nothing is paid before it is signed, and payment goes only to the company account on the invoice.
  5. The exporter declares the car in China and books sea freight. We do not guarantee a delivery date.
  6. The broker clears the car; you pay the import taxes and the car is delivered to your door (DAP).
