How to import a Chinese electric car into Oman (2026)

Diese Seite ist auf Englisch.

CRAVEUO EV Export · Sources last checked 2026-10-30 · General information, not legal advice. We do not clear customs in Oman. Nothing here is a promise or a quote.

Quick answer

Oman's electric-car tax relief was reported as starting on 1 July 2023 for three years, so it ran to about 30 June 2026. We found no renewal and no decision number, and the only sources are 2023 press reports. Treat duty relief and 0% VAT as unconfirmed until you have them in writing. The standard VAT rate is 5% under Royal Decree 121/2020. Used private cars must be under 7 years old (Oman Customs). Importing a car needs a Gulf (GSO) conformity certificate approved in Oman, and the customs permit costs 5 OMR for approval plus 5 OMR for release.

Is the EV tax relief still valid?

We cannot say. This is what we found:

  • The 2023 measures came from Royal Oman Police (ROP) and the Tax Authority (Atheer). We did not find the decision text. Orbitax gives 1 June 2023 as the start date, against 1 July elsewhere.
  • The Transport Ministry was still reminding owners of the relief in January 2024 (Oman Observer).
  • A seller's article says official channels showed no clear renewal up to 15 Aug 2026. That is one source, and we saw only a summary.
  • Tax Authority decisions 223, 224 and 225 of 2026 changed the VAT 0% list from 1 Oct 2026. Reports cover food, medicines and medical equipment and do not mention electric cars. This does not prove the EV relief has ended.

Our reading: until you have written confirmation, plan on the relief not applying. Ask the Tax Authority and ROP in writing, and ask a customs broker what your car would pay today.

The VAT relief may also have conditions. Zawya is reported to list three: pure electric or hydrogen power, registration in Oman as an electric or zero-emission car, and purchase from a VAT-registered business in Oman. We could not open that page. If it is right, we read it as a question mark over a car bought directly from abroad.

Who can import

  • Company

The vehicle permit asks for a commercial registration copy (Oman Customs)

  • Private person

The used-vehicle page sets a minimum age of 18 for individual importers (Oman Customs). Our reading is that both companies and individuals can import. Whether either needs an agent or importer status: not found

  • Personal-effects route

Limited to non-commercial quantities, and its exemption does not cover means of transport (Oman Customs)

  • Local agents

Some Chinese brands have an official agent in Oman. Whether the commercial agencies law limits imports by others: not found

Used cars

Besides the 7-year limit, a 2018 report says cars with major accident, flood, fire or hurricane damage are refused (Oman Observer). For used cars coming from a Gulf state, ROP replaced the Clearance Certificate with an export certificate from the country of registration from 1 July 2025 (Oman Observer).

Conformity and registration

GSO 2698, the Gulf technical standard for electric cars, was made binding in Oman by Ministerial Decision 45/2023. We saw the title only; the text is behind a paywall. From 1 May 2023, releasing a new electric car requires a conformity certificate approved by GSO (Times of Oman). Ask in writing whether your exact version holds one, and do not assume a China-market car does.

The ROP steps for type approval at registration: not found. A 2018 report mentions a technical assessment by the competent authority (Oman Observer). Oman's petrol emission limit is Euro 4 on the GSO list; that matters only for hybrids.

Steering, charging and port

Steering

We found no official rule. Only a forum and similar relocation guides say left-hand drive, and we did not open them. China-market cars are left-hand drive.

Charging

We found no Omani rule naming CCS2 or GB/T for fast charging. Oman lists a connector standard, OS GSO IEC 62196-6:2025; whether it is mandatory was not found. The Transport Ministry set a minimum of 120 kW for public road chargers (Atheer). Press counted 160 charging points, and a little over 2,000 electric cars registered by the end of 2025 (Oman Observer). Ask which plug your car has before you order.

Port

Car carriers were told to leave Sultan Qaboos Port by 31 Aug 2014, with cargo moving to Sohar (MarineLink). Sohar reported RoRo capacity above 200,000 cars a year in 2015 (Offshore Energy, not opened). We did not find its 2026 car services, so ask your forwarder which port applies. This site shows FOB prices only.

How an order works

  1. Ask a customs broker in Oman what your car pays today, and get the Tax Authority's answer on the EV relief in writing.
  2. Check that your exact version has the Gulf conformity certificate.
  3. Get a quote from the licensed Chinese export company named in the contract.
  4. Sign the contract. Nothing is paid before it is signed, and payment goes only to the company account on the invoice.
  5. Apply for the customs vehicle permit, clear the car and pay the taxes assessed. Then register it with ROP.
