How much does it cost to replace an EV battery? (2026)

Quick answer

The most-cited range is about $5,000 to $16,000 out of warranty, from Recurrent, based on US reports up to 2024. Some reports run well above that. Few owners face the bill: Recurrent found about 0.3% of 2022 and later cars had a replaced pack. We found no official replacement price list for Chinese EV brands abroad, so get a written quote for your car.

What people have reported

Recurrent's December 2024 review gives $5,000 to $16,000. It collects figures from dealer quotes, shop price lists, forums and listings. Its author says reliable data is hard to find, so read these as examples.

  • Nissan Leaf, 40 kWh

    Reported cost: $8,000 to $12,500

    Basis: Shop price list

  • Nissan Leaf, 62 kWh

    Reported cost: $12,000 to $15,000

    Basis: Shop price list

  • Chevy Bolt, 60 kWh

Reported cost: $16,250, including $870 labour

    Basis: Dealer quote, 2018

  • Tesla Model 3, 75 kWh

    Reported cost: $15,799, including labour

    Basis: Remanufactured pack, 2020

  • VW e-Golf, 35.8 kWh

    Reported cost: $23,443

    Basis: Dealer quote, 2021

  • BMW i3, 22 kWh

    Reported cost: Over $33,000

    Basis: Recent dealer quotes

All are from the same Recurrent review. They span several years and US prices, so they do not compare directly. Recurrent also says US prices run about 10% to 12% higher, and that supply and demand for replacement packs there are low.

Why a bill can be far above the pack price

BloombergNEF's 2025 survey put the average battery-electric pack at $99/kWh. Its average for all segments in China was $84/kWh, and LFP across all segments was $81/kWh, against $128/kWh for NMC.

Do not multiply these by your battery size. They are survey averages for battery packs, not what a workshop charges an owner. Recurrent says its own per-kWh figures exclude labour, taxes, shipping and markups, so a real bill is higher.

Chinese brands

We looked for an official out-of-warranty price from BYD and other Chinese brands in markets abroad, and did not find one. What turned up came from accessory shops and forum posts. The figures vary widely, so we leave them out.

For your car, the honest answer is a written quote. If your car is a China-market export, ask first whether anyone in your country can supply and fit the pack. See our warranty and repair guide.

How likely you are to need one

Recurrent's November 2025 study of more than 30,000 cars found these replacement rates, outside big recalls:

  • All cars, including those over 10 years old: under 4%.
  • First-generation EVs: about 8.5%.
  • 2022 and later models: about 0.3%.

Most cars in that data are still young, and it says the long-term answer is unknown. Normal wear rarely forces a swap. See how fast batteries degrade.

Warranty comes first

Warranty terms for China-market cars are often tied to China. NIO's, for example, cover cars bought and used in China.

What to do if you are told you need a new pack

  1. Get the fault in writing. Ask for the fault codes and a capacity test result, not only a verbal diagnosis.
  2. Check your warranty first. Have your VIN, purchase date and service records ready.
  3. Ask if a module can be repaired. Recurrent lists module-level repair on some cars, such as the BMW i3 and VW ID.4. Whether this works on your car depends on its pack design.
  4. Ask about refurbished packs. Recurrent says these are generally cheaper than the maker's part. Ask what warranty comes with the pack, and check supply for your model.
  5. Check your car insurance if the damage came from an accident or a flood.
  6. Get a second quote from a workshop that works on high-voltage systems.

Häufige Fragen

Will the battery cost more than the car is worth?
On an older or cheaper car, it can. Weigh a quote against the car's market value before you agree.
Are LFP packs cheaper to replace?
LFP cost less in BNEF's survey across all segments. We found no owner price data showing this carries through to replacement bills.
Do you have to replace the whole pack?
Not always. It depends on the car. Ask for a module repair option.
Will prices fall?
Pack prices have fallen for years. Recurrent cites over $400/kWh in 2012. We can't say what your workshop will charge in future.
Can I buy a used pack?
Recurrent lists used packs for some models. Capacity is often unknown, and your country's rules on handling and fitting high-voltage batteries apply. Use a qualified workshop.
